How to Refill a Vape Pod Without Leaks: Step-by-Step for Side-Fill, Bottom-Fill and Top-Fill Pods

Uwell Caliburn G3/G4/G4 Mini

Overview

Learning how to refill a vape pod takes two minutes and prevents the two problems that end most pods early: leaks and burnt coils. The routine is the same on every refillable pod at Vaps Shop AE, whether it fills from the side like a Uwell Caliburn G, from the bottom like a Geekvape Q pod, or from the top like an OXVA Xlim EZ cartridge: open the port, insert the nozzle fully, fill to just below the top, close firmly, and, on a new pod, wait five minutes before the first draw. This guide walks through each pod type, how much to fill, and the mistakes to avoid.

Last updated: 28 September 2026. Disclosure: Vaps Shop AE sells the pods and e-liquids referenced. Pod designs vary; the product listing or box for your pod shows where its fill port is.

How to Refill a Vape Pod Step 1: Find the Fill Port

Every refillable pod has a port sealed by a silicone plug or a sliding cap. Side-fill pods (Uwell Caliburn G and Air, Vaporesso XROS, OXVA NeXlim, VOOPOO VMate) have a rubber plug on one side, sometimes hidden under a lip. Bottom-fill pods (Geekvape Q and U pods, SMOK Novo pods, Lost Vape Ursa pods) have a plug on the underside next to the contacts, so you remove the pod from the device to fill it. Top-fill pods (OXVA Xlim EZ and XL cartridges, VOOPOO Argus Top Fill, Vaporesso XROS Series 4-pack) open under the mouthpiece or via a sliding cover, and can often be filled without removing the pod.

If you cannot find the port, check the product page in the pods and coils category; the photos show it.

Step 2: Remove the Pod and Open the Port

Pull the pod straight out of the device; magnets or clips release with a gentle tug. Hold it with the port facing up and lift the plug with a fingernail; it stays tethered on most pods. On top-fill pods, slide or flip the cover open. Wipe any condensation from the contacts and the well in the device while the pod is out; liquid on the pins causes misfires. If the pod is new, this is the moment to check the coil resistance printed on it matches the liquid you are about to use.

Our coil resistance guide explains why 0.8 ohm wants 50/50 salt and 0.3 ohm wants 70/30 freebase.

Step 3: Fill to Just Below the Top

Insert the bottle’s nozzle fully into the port so liquid goes into the tank, not down the airway in the centre of the pod. Squeeze slowly. Stop when the liquid reaches a few millimetres below the top of the tank; that air gap is what holds liquid in the wicking ports by pressure, and a pod filled to the brim leaks. A 2ml pod takes seconds; a 4ml or 6ml pod a little longer. Tilt the pod slightly to let air escape if the liquid stops flowing in.

Use the right liquid: 50/50 salt nicotine for MTL pods, 70/30 freebase for sub-ohm pods. Our best vape juice guide lists both.

Step 4: Close the Plug Firmly

Press the silicone plug fully home until it sits flush; a plug proud by a millimetre lets air in and liquid out. On sliding top-fill covers, slide until you feel the click. Wipe any liquid from the outside of the pod so it does not run into the device. Reinsert the pod; it should seat with a click or a firm magnetic pull. If the pod leaks within minutes of refilling, the plug is the first thing to check, and our pod leaking guide covers the rest.

Replace a pod whose plug has stretched or torn; it will never seal properly again.

Step 5: Prime a New Pod for Five Minutes

A new pod’s cotton is dry. After the first fill, stand it upright for five minutes so the liquid soaks through evenly before the coil is heated; drawing sooner burns dry cotton and the pod is finished on its first puff. On replaceable-coil pods, add a few drops of liquid directly to the cotton ports on the coil before fitting it, then fill and wait. Take the first few draws gently and, on adjustable kits, at the bottom of the coil’s wattage range. Our burnt taste guide explains what happens when priming is skipped.

Refills on a pod already in use need no wait; the cotton is already saturated.

Step 6: Refill Early and Replace on Time

Refill when the pod is about a quarter full, before the level drops below the wicking ports, and keep the device upright so the ports stay covered. Replace the pod when flavour fades, typically after one to three weeks, and before it tastes burnt. Keep a spare pack; Vaps Shop AE delivers pods within two hours across Dubai and within 24 hours to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. All vaping products are 18+ under UAE regulations, as summarised on the UAE Government tobacco provisions page.

The replacement pods guide lists the right pod for every kit in stock.

The Five Mistakes That Cause Most Problems

Filling down the centre airway instead of the tank, which floods the coil and spits. Filling to the brim, which leaks. Not seating the plug, which leaks. Drawing on a new pod immediately, which burns it. And using a thick 70/30 liquid in a small MTL pod, which starves and burns the coil within a day. Avoid those five and a pod will last its full life. Our refillable pod system guide covers the kits themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I refill a vape pod?

Remove the pod, open the silicone plug or top cover, insert the bottle nozzle fully into the tank (not the centre airway), fill to just below the top, close the plug firmly and reinsert. On a new pod, wait five minutes before drawing.

How much e-liquid should I put in a pod?

Fill to a few millimetres below the top, leaving an air gap. Over-filling causes leaks.

Why does my pod leak after refilling?

Usually over-filling, a plug not pressed fully home, or liquid poured down the centre airway. Refill lower and reseat the plug.

Do I need to prime a refillable pod?

Only when new: fill and wait five minutes before the first draw so the dry cotton saturates. Later refills need no wait.

What e-liquid should I refill my pod with?

50/50 salt nicotine for MTL pods of 0.8 ohm and above; 70/30 freebase for sub-ohm pods of 0.4 ohm and below.

Verdict

Open the port, fill the tank to just below the top, close firmly, prime a new pod for five minutes, and refill at a quarter full. Pick the right liquid from the best vape juice guide and the right pod from the replacement pods guide.
