Vape Coil Resistance Guide: 0.15 to 1.2 Ohm Explained (Which Coil, What Wattage, Which Liquid)
In this guide
Overview
This vape coil resistance guide explains the number printed on every pod and coil, from 0.15 ohm to 1.2 ohm, and why it decides the wattage you should use, the e-liquid you should fill, and the kind of draw you get. Resistance is the single most misunderstood spec in vaping: a lower number means a hotter, cloudier, thirstier coil, not a better one. Here is how to read it, with examples from the pods and coils in stock at Vaps Shop AE.

Vape Coil Resistance Guide Basics: What an Ohm Is
Resistance, measured in ohms, is how much a coil resists the flow of electricity from the battery. At a fixed voltage, a lower-resistance coil lets more current through, so it draws more power and gets hotter. A 1.2 ohm coil at 3.7 volts draws about 11W; a 0.6 ohm coil about 23W; a 0.15 ohm coil about 90W. That is why sub-ohm coils, below 1.0 ohm, need big batteries and produce big vapour, and why a 1.2 ohm coil in a 16W kit is perfectly matched.
Modern regulated kits set wattage directly, so you rarely calculate this yourself, but the relationship still governs everything: the coil’s resistance sets the wattage window it can safely handle, and that window sets the liquid and draw style.
0.8 to 1.2 Ohm: MTL Coils for Salt Nicotine
Coils from 0.8 to 1.2 ohm run at 10W to 20W, produce modest vapour with a tight draw, and are made for salt nicotine at 10mg to 20mg in a 50/50 liquid. They are the default in every MTL pod kit: Geekvape Q pods at 0.8 and 1.2 ohm, Uwell Caliburn G pods, OXVA Xlim V3 pods at 0.8 and 1.2 ohm, SMOK Novo 2X pods at 0.8 and 0.9 ohm, Geekvape One pods at 0.8 and 1.2 ohm, and Geekvape G Series coils up to 1.8 ohm. The higher the number, the tighter and cooler the draw and the longer a bottle lasts.
If you are an ex-smoker on a pod kit, this is your range. Our MTL pod kit guide and nic salt guide pair the kits and liquids.
0.4 to 0.7 Ohm: Restricted-Lung Coils
Coils from 0.4 to 0.7 ohm run at 20W to 40W and sit between MTL and direct-lung: a looser draw, warmer vapour, more cloud, and a preference for lower-strength salt (5mg to 10mg) or 6mg freebase in a 60/40 liquid. The Geekvape Q pod at 0.6 ohm, OXVA Xlim V3 at 0.6 ohm, SMOK Novo 5 at 0.7 ohm, SMOK LP2 DC at 0.6 ohm, VOOPOO Argus E40 and Multi-Ohm cartridges, and Geekvape U pods at 0.7 ohm all live here. This is the range mid-power kits such as the OXVA NeXlim 2 and VOOPOO Argus G4 are built around.
Do not put 20mg salt in a 0.4 ohm pod at 35W; the nicotine per puff is far too high. Drop the strength or raise the resistance.
0.15 to 0.3 Ohm: Sub-Ohm DTL Coils
Coils from 0.15 to 0.3 ohm run at 40W to 90W, produce dense clouds with an open direct-lung draw, and need 3mg to 6mg freebase in a 70/30 liquid. The SMOK RPM 3 coils at 0.15 and 0.23 ohm, SMOK LP2 Meshed at 0.23 ohm, Uwell PA at 0.3 ohm, Geekvape Zeus mesh coils, Freemax MX and Onnix coils, and Vaporesso GTX mesh coils are the sub-ohm options in stock. These belong in pod mods and tanks with 2,500mAh-plus or external batteries, covered in our pod mod guide and sub-ohm tank guide.
Sub-ohm coils use e-liquid three to four times faster than MTL coils and drain a battery in hours at full power. They are for people who want clouds and warmth, not for anyone trying to make a bottle last.
Mesh vs Wire: Why Almost Every Coil Is Mesh Now
Older coils were a wound wire; modern coils are a strip of metal mesh with holes punched in it. Mesh has more surface area in contact with the cotton, so it heats evenly, ramps up faster, produces more consistent flavour and lasts longer before the cotton scorches. Almost every pod and coil in stock is mesh, and disposables market dual and triple mesh coils for the same reason. Our mesh vs single coil guide compares them.
Resistance still matters with mesh: a 0.8 ohm mesh coil is still an MTL coil, a 0.2 ohm mesh coil still a sub-ohm coil. Mesh changes how well a coil performs within its range, not the range itself.
Matching Wattage to Resistance
Every replacement coil and most pods print a recommended wattage range on the side, and it is the only number you need. Start at the bottom of the range with a fresh, primed coil and move up until flavour peaks; going above the range burns the cotton within a few puffs. As a rule of thumb: 1.2 ohm, 10 to 14W; 0.8 ohm, 12 to 18W; 0.6 ohm, 18 to 25W; 0.4 ohm, 25 to 35W; 0.3 ohm, 30 to 45W; 0.2 ohm, 45 to 65W; 0.15 ohm, 60 to 80W.
On auto-wattage kits such as the Geekvape Sonder Q3, the device reads the pod’s resistance and sets power itself; you only choose the pod. Our battery mAh guide explains how wattage then sets battery life.

Is Lower Resistance Better?
No. Lower means hotter, cloudier and thirstier. The best resistance is the one that matches your liquid and how you like to draw.
Can I Use a 0.6 Ohm Pod With 20mg Salt?
You can, at the bottom of its wattage range with the airflow closed, but most people find it too strong. 0.8 ohm or higher is the safer match.
Why Does My Coil Read a Different Resistance on the Screen?
Manufacturing tolerance of a few hundredths of an ohm is normal. A large difference means a bad connection: reseat the pod.
How Long Does a Coil Last?
One to three weeks, less with sweet liquids or at the top of its wattage range. See our coil life guide.
Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| One number tells you wattage, liquid and draw style | Easy to mismatch resistance and nicotine strength |
| Every coil prints its safe wattage range | Sub-ohm coils use liquid and battery fast |
| Mesh coils make every resistance perform better | Some listings omit resistance in the title |
| Pods in 2-3 resistances let one kit suit different liquids | Wrong wattage burns a coil in minutes |
Frequently Asked Questions
What does ohm mean on a vape coil?
Resistance to electrical current. Lower ohms let more power through, making the coil hotter and cloudier; higher ohms make it cooler and tighter.
What resistance is best for salt nicotine?
0.8 to 1.2 ohm at 10-20W with a 50/50 liquid at 10-20mg.
What is a sub-ohm coil?
Any coil below 1.0 ohm, though in practice the term means 0.15-0.4 ohm coils run at 40W+ with freebase e-liquid for direct-lung vaping.
Can I put a sub-ohm coil in a pod kit?
Only if the kit is designed for it and can supply the wattage. A 16W kit cannot drive a 0.2 ohm coil properly.
What wattage should I use for a 0.8 ohm coil?
12 to 18W. Start at 12W with a primed coil and increase until flavour peaks.
Verdict
Salt nicotine in a pod kit: 0.8 to 1.2 ohm. Freebase in a pod mod or tank: 0.15 to 0.4 ohm. Anything in between: 0.6 ohm with lower-strength liquid. Find the pod or coil for your kit in the replacement pods guide.
