The VG PG ratio vape juice bottles print on the label, 50/50, 60/40 or 70/30, describes the proportion of vegetable glycerin to propylene glycol in the base liquid, and it decides three things: how thick the liquid is, how much vapour it makes, and how strongly it hits the throat. Get it wrong and a good e-liquid burns a pod or gurgles in a tank. VG PG Ratio Vape Juice Basics: What VG and PG Each Do
Propylene glycol (PG) is a thin, almost odourless liquid that carries flavour well and produces the throat hit that ex-smokers associate with a cigarette. It wicks quickly into cotton, so it suits small coils. Vegetable glycerin (VG) is thick and slightly sweet; it produces dense vapour and a soft, smooth feel, but it wicks slowly and needs larger coil ports. Every e-liquid blends the two, with nicotine and flavourings dissolved in the mix.
The ratio is written VG first. A 50/50 liquid is half and half; a 70/30 liquid is 70 percent VG. Higher VG means more cloud and less throat hit; higher PG means more flavour clarity, more throat hit and thinner liquid. Nobody sells 100 percent of either for vaping.
50/50: For Pod Kits and Salt Nicotine
A 50/50 ratio is thin enough to wick through the small ports of a 0.8 to 1.2 ohm pod at 10W to 25W, which is why almost every 30ml salt nicotine bottle is 50/50. 70/30: For Pod Mods, Tanks and Freebase
A 70/30 ratio is thick and made for the large wicking ports of sub-ohm coils at 0.15 to 0.6 ohm and 40W to 80W. It produces the dense clouds that direct-lung vapers want and a smooth inhale that lets 3mg or 6mg freebase feel satisfying without harshness. 60/40 and In-Between: The Crossover Ratio
Some liquids are 60/40, a compromise that works in mid-power pods with 0.4 to 0.6 ohm coils and airflow half open, such as the OXVA NeXlim 2, VOOPOO Argus G4 or Vaporesso Luxe X3 with their lower-resistance pods. If you own one kit and want to vape both salt and freebase in it, a 60/40 liquid with the right pod is the way to do it. Check the pod’s resistance: 0.4 ohm and below wants high VG; 0.8 ohm and above wants 50/50.
Not every listing states the ratio. When it does not, assume 30ml salt bottles are 50/50 and 60ml to 120ml freebase bottles are 70/30, which is the industry norm, and check the bottle label on arrival.
How Ratio Changes Flavour, Throat Hit and Clouds
PG carries flavour more precisely, so a 50/50 liquid tastes sharper and more defined; VG mutes flavour slightly but adds a sweetness and thickness that suits dessert and cream profiles. Throat hit rises with PG and with nicotine: a 50/50 20mg salt is the strongest hit a pod kit delivers; a 70/30 3mg freebase is the softest a pod mod delivers. Clouds rise with VG and with power: a 70/30 liquid at 60W produces several times the vapour of a 50/50 at 15W.
Some people are sensitive to PG and find high-PG liquids scratch the throat or dry the mouth; a 60/40 or 70/30 blend in a suitable device usually solves it.
Ratio and Heat: A Dubai-Specific Note
Heat thins e-liquid. A 70/30 liquid that wicks slowly at room temperature wicks faster in a device left in a warm car, which sounds helpful until it floods the coil and leaks through the airflow. A 50/50 liquid in the same conditions leaks more readily still. Keep devices out of direct sun, store bottles closed at room temperature, and if a pod starts leaking in summer, the ratio is rarely the problem; the temperature is.
